How To Get Cat Urine Stains Off Carpet

Due to its high ammonia content, cat urine has a very pungent and unpleasant odor. Trays with modern fillers do an excellent job of eliminating odors if the owner changes the filler in a timely manner. But even the most educated cats can miss. The reason is often an insult of an animal, a dirty toilet, an inadvertently closed door to the room where the tray is located, or simply a desire to draw attention to oneself. And what can we say about untrained animals to walk in the litter box! You have to expect surprises from them quite often.

Removing urine and smelling is necessary not only for reasons of order and aesthetics. Having marked the place once, the animal can decide that this is where its new toilet is located, and the appearance of puddles of urine will become permanent.

How to get rid of a fresh cat urine stain?

If the urine is on the floor, then it is enough to wash the floor with any chlorine-containing agent – chlorine both disinfects and removes the smell. But if the pet has chosen a carpet, especially a colored one, bleach will no longer work – it will wash off the dye from the carpet and damage its pile.

If you find an animal at a crime scene, then, before punishing the culprit, you need to immediately clean the carpet. As long as the stain is fresh, you can do this with the help of available tools. Place the cat next to it while cleaning to make him feel ashamed.

Use table vinegar, baking soda, dish washing liquid or liquid soap, and hydrogen peroxide to clean your carpet of urine.

  1. Preparatory stage – To do this, you can use rags or napkins – just blot the carpet until no more urine comes out of it. The more you mechanically remove the urine, the better.
  2. Dilute 1: 3 table vinegar in water and saturate the stain with it. Leave on for 2-3 hours. When working with vinegar, open the windows to ventilate the room!
  3. When the carpet is slightly dry, sprinkle generously with baking soda over the stain.
  4. Mix 1 teaspoon of detergent (dish washing detergent or liquid soap) with 1/3 cup (0.71 liters) of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Spray the mixture onto the baking soda.
  5. Use a brush to scrub the stain and leave to dry completely.
  6. Remove dry baking soda from the carpet with a vacuum cleaner.

For dark carpets, a weak solution of potassium permanganate or iodine (10-20 drops of iodine per 1 liter of water) is suitable. The solution should be applied to the stain for 5-10 minutes, and then rinsed with clean water. But first, it is better to apply potassium permanganate or iodine on an inconspicuous area of the carpet.

After the product is completely dry, we recommend sprinkling it with lemon juice or tea tree oil. This will discourage the cat from urinating on the carpet again.

In case, if the stain was found a few hours later, a persistent smell of urine in the room has dispersed, the above technologies will not save the situation. You can start raising your cat right away.

During the time after the mark, the liquid has already penetrated into the deep layers of the carpet, where thousands of bacteria have found a home for themselves. As a result, the beloved carpet has become a dangerous object to use, especially for small children.
